Abstrak

Academic vocabulary is often used in academic texts and dialogues in various fields such as geometry, biology, science, chemistry and mathematics, but rarely used in non-academic texts and in our everyday talk. Academic vocabulary can be composed of three types of vocabulary: 1. Common words are accepted for academic use. 2. Non general “academic” terms. 3. Specific terminology for individual subject areas. General Service List (GSL) is a good starting point for identifying common English words. Many GSL words can be used in academic context. Common vocabulary also includes common words that have specific meanings in academic contexts. Academic Word List (AWL) is an example of words that are not very common in normal learning, but are used frequently in all or most academic disciplines, so all EAP learners can study them. This is an essential resource for building a general academic vocabulary, it is based on written academic texts, so it is useful in a context in which it is written.
