Keywords:
cohesion, cohesive devices, L2 writing, essay analysis, university level.Abstract
This study analyzes the use of cohesive devices in students’ essay at university level in Uzbekistan. Using frameworks by Halliday and Hasan (1976) and Hoey (1991), the analysis identifies the problematic applications of grammatical and lexical cohesion. The findings reveal several challenges such as excessive repetition and ambiguous references. Issues with contrastive conjunctions and synonym misuse also highlight developmental gaps in the writer’s second-language proficiency. The study emphasizes the significance of mastering cohesive ties to enhance clarity, coherence, and overall writing quality in L2 learners.
