Abstract: Toponyms, as linguistic expressions used to denote geographical
locations, carry significant lexical-semantic and pragmatic information that reflects the
cultures and histories of the societies that use them. This article explores the lexical-
semantic and pragmatic features of English and Uzbek toponyms, analyzing how place
names in these languages reveal information about geography, history, and
sociopolitical context. The study draws on a variety of examples from both languages
to investigate the cognitive and cultural functions of toponyms. The article concludes
with a discussion of the implications of these findings for understanding the role of
place names in communication and identity construction.
